The reporter learned from the Yunnan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 1st that the station has recently joined hands with the Shandong University team to successfully observe the inner corona and obtain its white light image using a 50 mm white light coronagraph independently developed by my country. This is the first time that my country has obtained an inner coronal white light image at a domestic observation site. The corona is the outermost structure of the solar atmosphere, in which the density of matter is very thin, and its brightness is at least 200,000 times weaker than the center of the sun’s circular surface. Only a few countries in the world have mastered the design and manufacturing technology of white light coronagraphs.

Whether a suitable site can be found for the white light coronagraph indicates whether a country has a natural environment for conducting high-level heliophysical observation research.
This observation is the task content of the “Coronagraph Near Space Carrying Experiment”, a sub-project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ strategic pilot science and technology project undertaken by the Lin Jun team of the Yunnan Observatory, aimed at a distance of 30 to 35 kilometers from the ground. , Observing the inner corona between 1.1 and 1.5 solar radii, investigating and studying the magnetic field structure and plasma distribution and its possible evolution process. The observation was carried out at Site 2 of Daocheng Observatory of Yunnan Observatory. This is a ground experiment of the core equipment carried out by the coronagraph before the near-space observation. It is reported that the near-space observation of the coronagraph is planned to be carried out in August and September this year.

Previously, after more than ten years of arduous inspections and surveys, Liu Yu’s team from the Yunnan Observatory found a candidate site suitable for astronomical observations in Wuming Mountain, Daocheng County, Ganzi County, Sichuan Province. The site has now entered a comprehensive evaluation stage. After more than ten years of hard work, the Xia Lidong team of Shandong University (Weihai), together with Zhang Hongxin’s team from Changchun Institute of Optics and Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has developed various types of coronagraphs, and the technical level is at the top of the country.
The success of the white light coronagraph ground experiment shows that Wuming Mountain in Daocheng is an excellent solar observation site, which fully meets the requirements of high-quality and high-precision solar ground observation, and is a world-class solar observation site. The experimental results show that my country has fully mastered the development technology of white-light coronagraph, and has opened a new way for independent research and development of high-performance white-light coronagraph.
